Heavy, extra for international shipping.; 6-1/2" x 10"; viii, 667, [4] pp; Covers worn at top/bottom of spine and at corners with some fraying, a few spots of soiling including a faint ring on front panel and a faint line on the spine, hinges are quite solid (surprisingly so; the book is quite heavy), prior owner name to front flyleaf, faint toning to paper, text block clean and unmarked, maps also clean but a few short tears are seen.

This is a deluxe copy, signed by the author on a blank front flyleaf and protected by the publishers box with title printed on top. Scarce thus. ; 9-1/2" x 12"; Signed by Author; Book has been well-protected by the box and has little wear - slight corner wear, slight cover soiling. The book has seen little use, with most pages still unopened. One page has been opened a bit roughly with a small closed tear seen along right edge. Text block otherwise clean and free of tears or writing. Box has some toning. Box bottom is sound but lid is splittlng along two edges, with one tear to a side panel. There are no missing pieces; title in pencil along right edge.

The third issue published omits the volume and issue number from the masthead. ; 11-1/2" x 18"; 32 pp; The first four issues of this newspaper happened to coincide with news of the earthquake of September 1st between Yokohama and Tokyo. The quake and aftershocks caused significant damage and these first issues contain much news and many photographs to report on the events. The first issue also contains some adverts welcoming Mr. Vanderbilt to Los Angeles. Further, the first issue cover notes "The Largest Paid Circulation Any Newspaper Ever Started With". This was his first newspaper venture, and lasted under his ownership until 1926 when it went into receivership. It was taken over by Manchester Boddy who ran it until 1954 and ceased operations in 1956. [Wikipedia] ; Many short tears, generally well preserved.
